AIKO: “This notice is not about the price of a specific game. It is about changing the direction of how PlayStation games are purchased. For people who collect physical editions, it is something worth knowing in advance.”

Red: “If the PS3 and Vita stores move at the same time, the impact will feel even bigger. Anyone with games they still want to buy on older hardware should check the schedule first.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced two policy changes on the same day through the official PlayStation Blog. One is that physical disc production for new games on PlayStation consoles will end from January 2028. The other is the closure schedule for the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita.

This announcement is not about individual game prices or discounts. It is a platform policy notice about what form future game purchases will take. Prices will therefore need to be checked separately for each game, and this notice itself does not confirm the price of any new game.

How far does the disc version impact go?

The official post explains that, from January 2028, physical disc production will stop for newly released games on PlayStation consoles. After that, new titles will be offered in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail distribution.

However, it separately states that games already released, or games released in disc format before January 2028, will not be affected. This does not mean that physical copies people currently own, or disc releases that are already planned, will suddenly disappear all at once.

The PS3 and PS Vita store closure schedule also matters

The PlayStation Store for PS3 will begin closing first in some regions from 2026, and globally, the PS3 and PS Vita stores are moving toward closure in July 2027. After the closure, new content purchases on those devices will no longer be possible.

To ease the transition, SIE says that even after the closing date, previously purchased content can still be redownloaded for the time being. Even so, if there are games you still intended to buy on older hardware, the schedule has become important.

What physical collectors and older-hardware users should take from this

For people who prefer physical editions, this announcement is a fairly significant turning point. In particular, it increases the likelihood that collecting new releases physically after 2027 will become less common.

For older hardware, the issue is more practical. If there are digital games you have not yet bought on PS3 or PS Vita, you should first check the closure schedule for your country and the region of your account. SIE says previously purchased games will remain available for redownload, but new purchases are moving toward being blocked after the closure.

Sources and checked date: Checked on July 2, 2026

The official PlayStation Blog posts were checked for SIE’s notice that physical disc production for new games will end after January 2028, that titles will be offered in digital format, that disc releases before January 2028 will not be affected, that the PS3/PS Vita Store will close in stages with a global closure in July 2027, and that previously purchased content will remain available for redownload.
