Apple announced new Mac mini models powered by M6 and M5 Pro on August 25. Pre-orders opened the same day in 30 countries and regions, including the U.S., with deliveries and availability through Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers beginning September 22.
Inside the M6 model
Mac mini with M6 has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. It comes with 16GB of unified memory, can be configured with up to 32GB, and offers memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s.
Apple claims up to four times faster AI performance, up to twice the storage and graphics performance, and 40 percent faster CPU performance against the prior-generation comparison used in its announcement. In LM Studio, Apple reports up to 13.5 times faster LLM prompt processing than Mac mini with M1 and up to 4.8 times faster performance than M4.
M5 Pro and connectivity
The M5 Pro configuration supports up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, along with an enhanced shader core and third-generation ray tracing. Apple reports that LM Studio prompt processing is up to 8.5 times faster than on Mac mini with M2 Pro and up to four times faster than on M4 Pro.
Both versions support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with configurable 10Gb Ethernet. The front has two USB-C ports supporting USB 3 and a high-impedance-capable headphone jack. At the rear, the M6 version provides three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while M5 Pro has three Thunderbolt 5 ports; both also include HDMI and Ethernet. Thunderbolt 5 can be used to cluster multiple Mac mini units.
Release date, pricing, and software
Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 in the U.S., or $799 with education pricing. The M5 Pro model starts at $1,699, with education pricing beginning at $1,599.
macOS 27 is in public beta and is scheduled to arrive as a free software update this fall. Apple Intelligence features are also in public beta, with Korean and Japanese among the supported languages, although availability can vary by region and language. The Siri AI beta is due later this year for supported devices set to English.
