Proton Drive rebuild promises 3x faster uploads and 2x faster downloads

SNACK Quick Summary

  • Proton Drive moved onto a shared SDK engine and says uploads can now be up to 3x faster while downloads are up to 2x faster.
  • Photo timelines and album loading are also smoother, and Proton says new-file encryption can run up to 4x faster with less mobile heat and battery drain.
  • The bigger story is not only raw speed. Proton is rebuilding Drive into a more consistent cross-platform base for Linux, ecosystem features and outside integrations.

Snackgirls editor note

Red: “Private cloud tools do not stay lovable if they feel slow every single day. This update matters because it goes straight at daily-use friction.”

AIKO: “A shared engine also means future features and bug fixes can land more evenly across web, mobile and desktop.”

Kirari: “If photo scrolling is smoother and the phone heats up less, that changes how a backup app feels in normal life, not just on a benchmark chart.”

Proton is pitching this as more than a routine app refresh. By moving Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and web work onto one Drive SDK engine, the company says it changed both the immediate speed profile and the long-term structure of the product.

What feels faster right now

According to Proton, Drive now delivers uploads up to 3x faster and downloads up to 2x faster. The company specifically points to everyday jobs such as Android photo backup and macOS file sync finishing more quickly.

That sounds like a simple performance note, but in consumer cloud storage the most annoying pain points are usually waiting to upload, waiting to open and waiting for sync to settle. This update is clearly aimed at reducing that real-world drag.

Photos and encryption both got attention

Proton also says photo timelines, album loading and large-batch image browsing now feel smoother. Because photos are often the most frequently opened personal files, that is a core everyday improvement rather than a side feature.

The companion cryptography update says new-file end-to-end encryption can be up to 4x faster, while mobile heat and battery use are reduced on iOS and Android. The message is clear: keep privacy intact, remove more of the old waiting cost.

Why this matters beyond one speed chart

The SDK shift is really a promise to make Proton Drive less fragmented across platforms. Proton says this foundation should help future ecosystem integrations, outside-tool support and an actively developed Linux client.

For everyday users, the question is simple: is this cloud drive now fast enough to trust as a normal habit, not just a privacy backup option? This announcement is Proton’s attempt to answer that with both speed gains and a clearer product roadmap.
