Firefox lets users decide how much AI belongs in the browser

Mozilla outlined its approach to AI in Firefox on September 2, 2026. Users can block browser AI features, enable individual tools, choose a chatbot provider for the desktop sidebar, or use the more integrated Smart Window beta where available.

AI controls in General Settings

Firefox includes an AI controls section inside its General Settings panel. It provides a central place for managing the browser’s AI features.

A single toggle can block current and future AI features along with related pop-ups. Users who want selected tools can leave the broader controls available and choose features individually.

Optional tools and chatbot choices

Mozilla lists AI page translation tools, image alt text in the Firefox PDF viewer, tab group suggestions, and key points in link previews among the optional features.

The Firefox desktop sidebar supports a user-selected chatbot from Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral. Mozilla encourages users to examine each provider’s policy before choosing a service.

What Smart Window can do

Mozilla describes Smart Window as Firefox’s most integrated AI experience. It uses only the context a user shares, and with permission it can work with open tabs and browsing history to compare information, generate recommendations, summarize pages, and plan projects.

The beta also includes tab grouping and visual history previews. Through a partnership with Exa, it can locate current information on the web and show the sources behind its responses. Smart Window is currently offered in English in the U.S. and Canada.
