AIKO: I’m curious how a family coordinates updates across all its devices. A dependency graph with relatives in it—interesting.

Nea: I’d like everyone to agree on when there’s time for games before changing settings. I’d want to hear what the children hope to make room for, too.

Start with a conversation, then a Child Account

The first step is to discuss screen time before changing settings, so children understand the expectations and can take part in the plan.

Next, create a Child Account through Family Sharing. It enables age-based protections and parental controls while keeping parent and child personal information separate.

Agree on apps, websites and daily routines

The third step covers website and app safeguards. Apple names Ask to Buy and Ask to Browse as tools that let families review new apps and websites together.

The fourth is to schedule device use. Time Allowances and Schedules help families fit online time around sleep, schoolwork, physical activity and time with friends and family.

Choose contacts—and keep the conversation going

The fifth step is managing communications: parents decide whom their child can communicate with. Apple says Communication Safety is on by default for users under 18 to help protect them from viewing or sharing sensitive content.

The sixth step is to revisit the family plan as children grow. The guide also includes the American Academy of Pediatrics’ screen-time guidance by age group, from infants to teens, rather than prescribing one universal daily limit.

Every device in the family group needs its update

The new Screen Time features are available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. To use the update, every product in a Family Sharing group must be updated to its corresponding OS release; the requirement also includes watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 for devices that use them.

Feature availability varies by region, language and device model. The family guide is publicly available in English.
