Skills let Gemini users save frequently used instructions and bring them into a chat without retyping the setup. Access is currently rolling out to eligible adult personal-account users, ahead of a staged replacement of Gems that begins in November 2026.

Call up instructions without leaving your chat
Once you have saved a skill, type / followed by its name in the prompt bar to use it. Gemini can also recognize a relevant prompt and apply the skill automatically.
Several skills can work together in the same chat. Google’s example pairs a writing-style skill with brand guidelines, so both sets of instructions can shape the response without being pasted in each time. Skills reuse instructions within a chat; they do not independently run scheduled jobs.
Bring your reference files along
Skills can now include text documents, PDFs and images. You can also import skills made on other platforms through their SKILL.md files, although file-based skill creation is currently available only in the Gemini app on Mac and the web app at gemini.google.com.
Current access is for people over 18 signed in with a personal Google Account, across all Google AI subscription tiers. Google plans to extend availability to Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education customers in the coming weeks; access for younger users is also planned.
Sharing skills, adding Google Drive files and using notebooks from Gemini Notebook are planned for the coming weeks. Those additions are separate from the reference-file uploads already available.
Personal Gems move first, starting in November
Google will begin removing Gems support for personal accounts in November 2026. Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit accounts follow in March 2027, then education accounts in June 2027.
When standard Gems go away, Google says it will automatically recreate them as skills, including supported knowledge files. Users who want to move earlier can manually recreate a Gem as a skill.
Some Gem tools are still missing—and Labs Gems will not migrate
Skills do not yet work with Canvas or Deep Research. Video creation, music creation and Guided Learning are also among the Gem tools currently unsupported, and GitHub files cannot be included. A recreated Gem therefore will not necessarily retain every function it uses today.
Opal and Gems by Google Labs will also shut down in November 2026. Labs Gems will not migrate into skills; the automatic transition applies to standard Gems, not every Labs Gem or Opal mini app.
