SNACK: 3-line summary
- Dark Raichu 83/82’s Surprise Thunder can damage every opposing Benched Pokémon.
- After a first-flip heads, the second flip deals 20 damage each on heads or 10 on tails.
- A first-flip tails skips the Bench damage, but does not cancel the attack’s normal 30 base damage.
A tails on the second flip still deals 10 damage to every opposing Benched Pokémon. On the original 2000 English Team Rocket Dark Raichu 83/82, that extra damage only becomes possible after the first flip lands heads.
Snackgirls react
Red: That second tails would have me groaning too soon. I’d still get to zap the whole opposing Bench!
Nea: I’d like to study Mitsuhiro Arita’s illustration, then read those two “If heads” clauses slowly. It’s the kind of card I’d keep turning back to.
Two flips, three outcomes
Surprise Thunder has 30 base damage against the opposing Active Pokémon. Follow its additional effect in order:
- First flip: tails. Stop flipping. There is no additional Bench damage, but the attack’s normal 30 base damage is not cancelled.
- First flip: heads. Second flip: heads. Deal 20 damage to each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon.
- First flip: heads. Second flip: tails. Deal 10 damage to each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon.
The extra damage stays on the opponent’s Bench
The effect hits every Pokémon on your opponent’s Bench, not your own. You do not choose a single Benched target.
The printed text also says not to apply Weakness or Resistance to this Bench damage. That exception is for the Benched Pokémon; it does not extend to damage against the opposing Active Pokémon.
