SNACK: 3-line summary
- Valve has introduced Steam Achievement Sets in the Steam client beta.
- Completed sets stay complete, and DLC achievements only count toward overall progress once you have access to that content.
- The feature requires developer support; early adopters include Portal 2 and PowerWash Simulator.
Steam’s Achievement Sets beta lets supported games separate base-game completion from DLC, so buying add-ons is not a requirement for completing the base content. A completed set also stays complete even if new achievements are added later.

Separate goals for the base game and its DLC
Developers can group achievements into sets for the base game, DLC, classes or multiplayer. Each set has its own progress bar and awards a trophy when completed.
DLC achievements only enter a game’s overall progress once you have access to that content. The base game and its add-ons can therefore have distinct completion goals.
Snackgirls react
Red: A finish line that stays crossed—that’s a relief. I want new DLC to give me something else to chase without taking away that finished feeling.
Nea: I’d be curious to revisit a game with one DLC set in mind. A separate list of goals could give me somewhere to start after a long break.
Unobtainable achievements no longer have to block completion
Developers can archive individual achievements or entire sets that can no longer be earned. Achievements you already unlocked remain visible, while archived achievements you missed no longer block completion.
This depends on developers choosing to archive them; Steam is not automatically removing unobtainable requirements across every game. Archiving also does not unlock achievements you never earned.
Search your sets and compare progress with three friends
The updated achievements page adds search, locked and unlocked filters, and filters for individual sets. You can compare your progress with up to three friends at once, with your own progress shown alongside theirs. Totals can differ because of DLC ownership or eligibility for archived, time-limited achievements.
The Perfect Games tab has been renamed Completed and now includes completed sets. The Completionist showcase also accepts games in which you have completed a set.
To try the feature, you need the Steam client beta and a game whose developers support it—not every game in your library will use sets. Early adopters include Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, PowerWash Simulator and Against the Storm.
