Google Sheets Gemini adds web citations for individual cells

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Google Sheets’ Fill with Gemini now attaches referenced web sources to individual AI-generated cells.
  • You can summarize, categorize or process up to 3,000 cells in one request.
  • Access requires an eligible plan or add-on, and the gradual rollout means some accounts may still be waiting.

Google’s October 28 update to Fill with Gemini makes it easier to trace AI-generated values in Google Sheets back to their web sources. It also expands how much data you can work with in a single request.

Snackgirls react

AIKO: For a big batch, I’d start with the values that look out of place and follow their sources. Even a very tidy spreadsheet should be able to answer, “Where did you get that?”

Nea: I’d like this for organizing game lore—an intriguing setting detail would send me straight to the cited page. I might end up reading more than I catalog.

Follow a cell back to its web sources

When the AI function generates cell values, Gemini now attributes the web sources it referenced to each individual cell. These citations are available in Google Sheets on the web, giving you a way to compare a particular result with the pages behind it.

A citation does not guarantee that the generated value is correct. You still need to read the source and check whether it supports what Gemini put in the cell; the update does not automatically verify or correct every output.

Up to 3,000 cells in one request

Fill with Gemini now supports requests covering up to 3,000 cells for tasks such as summarizing, categorizing and processing data. That is the supported capacity of a single request, not an unlimited free-use allowance.

Google also says the upgraded processing delivers faster responses and better consistency from one cell to the next.

Who gets access, and where to find it

Eligible subscriptions include Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, and the consumer Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans. The Google AI Pro for Education and AI Expanded Access add-ons are also eligible; this is not a feature for every free personal account.

The gradual rollout began on October 20 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains and can take up to 15 days, so some accounts may still be waiting on October 30. Users who have Gemini in Sheets enabled receive the features by default as they roll out. To open the Gemini side panel, select Ask Gemini—the sparkle button at the top right of Sheets on the web.
