The Club Advisor Appears!
A few minutes before those footsteps, the three girls had been arguing over the first shot of their video.
After school, snack bags and scraps of paper were scattered across the Digital Media Research Club’s table. The three girls were about to try making a short video with a new editing app.

This one goes first! Kirari, get a shot of it.

Red, move your hand. You’re blocking the snack!

You two, we should decide what goes in the video before we start filming.
Nea went to write down the shot order, but the date on the activity plan caught her eye.

Huh? Our new club advisor is coming today?

Today? How are we only noticing now?!

Wait, Red! Put the snack bag down first!
Just as Kirari reached over to tap Red’s arm, heels clicked along the hallway. Everyone turned toward the door.

The sliding door opened all the way. Red didn’t even have time to hide the snack bag behind her back.

Hello. I’ll be the Digital Media Research Club’s advisor starting today. Were you filming something?

Yes! The snacks are props!

I hadn’t asked about those yet.

Red, you brought them up yourself!

Wait, more importantly—we didn’t know you were coming today.

The principal gave you the room first, and they’ve only just assigned a teacher to the club. Surprised? Please, carry on with what you were doing.

You’re not here to inspect what we’ve filmed, are you?

I’m not here to inspect it. Tell me what you’re trying to make.

There’s a new AI editing app that generates captions automatically. We want to make a thirty-second video about the snacks.

Which parts does it handle automatically?

It’s supposed to turn what we say into captions. We want to see how accurate it is, too.

Then keep the automatic captions as well. It could be interesting to compare them with your corrected version.

Okay. I’ll record that. Here’s our activity plan, too.
Nea turned the plan toward her. The advisor’s finger stopped on one row.

Hold on. Apart from filming, almost every task has Nea’s name on it.

I only put my name down for now. The three of us haven’t decided who’s doing what yet.

Nea finished everything up last time, too. I’ll write the script this time.

Shiro-chan, I’ll handle the editing and captions. I nearly stopped after taking the photos.

Good. Then each of you should write your own name beside the task you’ll take on.
The three girls set the plan in the middle of the table and filled in their sections. Even after Red wrote her name, she kept her pen poised over the page.

And I’m in charge of taste-testing!

Red, does eating the snacks really need its own role?

It does if she records what they taste like.

Hear that? Even the teacher agrees!

Then write it down right after you eat, before you forget!

I’ll check the product names and work out the schedule. We can decide together when to post it.

I’ll check where we’re allowed to film on school grounds.
With the roles settled, Red began writing her lines. Kirari aimed her phone at the snacks, and Nea laid the activity plan beside them.

I wrote the first line. “Crunchy, then nice and salty.” What do you think?

I like it. But you’ve swapped the names of the first and second snacks.

Oh, I missed that. I’ll fix it.
Once she’d corrected the snack names, Red read her line aloud. Kirari filmed the take and loaded it into the editing app.

The automatic captions are ready! …Wait. It turned “nice and salty” into “now I’m salty”!

Why would I be mad at a snack?!

I’ve saved the original. I’ll mark the mistake.

Shiro-chan, I’ll fix the captions. Can you check the schedule?

I’ve fixed the product names, too. I’ll read my line again.

Sounds good. I’ll find out by tomorrow whether you can film in the hallway.

Then we should put your job on the activity plan, too!

I’ll write it down.

Wait, I’ll write the teacher’s job!

Shiro-chan, put the pen down for a second. I’ll check it with Red!

…All right. I’ll tell you right away if anything’s wrong.
Red, Kirari, and the advisor left the clubroom. Nea stayed by the window a little longer, looking at the table that had been so lively moments before.

Since the advisor arrived, it feels like our club has really begun. I wonder what we’ll try next. I can’t wait to find out.
