SNACK: 3-line summary
- Ancient Mew debuted as a Japanese Pokémon movie promo in July 1999.
- The promo was modeled after the card that began film collector Lawrence III’s collection.
- Check the bottom copyright line for “Nintedo,” the typo on the first Japanese printing.
The “Nintedo” typo appears on the first Japanese printing of Ancient Mew, in the small copyright line along the bottom. The movie promo is distinctive for its ancient-style runes, but not every version carries that misspelling.

Snackgirls react
Red: A card with its own place in the movie’s story? Now I want to watch for Ancient Mew on screen and see how it fits Lawrence III’s collection.
Nea: I like how the runes make it resemble an old artifact. I’d want to look closely at the design, then read up on the original movie promotion.
From Lawrence III’s collection to a movie promo
In Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One, Ancient Mew is the card that began Lawrence III’s Pokémon collection. The tie-in promo was modeled after the card seen in the film, with ancient-style runes replacing the usual Japanese or English text.
The card was issued in Japan in July 1999 for the second Pokémon movie, Revelation Lugia, and cinema-goers could obtain it as part of a promotional booklet. In the UK and US, the international version was available to moviegoers during the first week of the film’s theatrical run in summer 2000.
What to look for along the bottom edge
The first Japanese printing spells Nintendo as “Nintedo.” A corrected Japanese printing followed. The international version includes a Wizards of the Coast copyright and differs in its border and font.
The accompanying front-and-back image shows the 1999 Japanese “Nintedo” error card. When comparing a copy, start with its actual copyright line and original distribution context rather than assuming every Ancient Mew is the typo version. These details help distinguish printings; they do not prove authenticity or establish condition.
