What Hi-Fi? published an independent review of Sony Bravia Theatre Trio with the optional Rear 9 speaker pair and Sub 9 subwoofer on October 9, 2026. The reviewer praised the seamless movement of Dolby Atmos effects from front to rear. That wireless surround still needs some wiring, though: the speakers exchange signals without cables between them, but every component needs mains power.

Red I’d love to hear an aircraft pass behind me in a movie and try to follow its direction by sound alone.
Nea I’d like to revisit a familiar film soundtrack in stereo with the Sub 9. I’m curious how the bass would change my impression of music I already know.
A place and a power outlet for each component
The base Trio is a 3.0.2-channel system. Adding both the optional Rear 9 pair and Sub 9 makes it 5.1.4: five main channels, one subwoofer channel and four height channels. Neither add-on is included with the base Trio.
Each speaker and the subwoofer needs its own mains connection, while the TV connects via HDMI eARC. At roughly 23kg and 40cm tall, the Sub 9 needs a stable spot with enough space; arrange help moving it into position.
Setup runs through Bravia Connect. For calibration, the supplied USB-C microphone plugs into a smartphone and is held at the listening position. The app accepts approximate speaker positions, while precise distances can help refine unusual or asymmetric layouts.

Stereo still includes the Sub 9
In the full setup reviewed, switching Sound Field off sends stereo music through the front left and right speakers and the Sub 9. There is currently no setting to exclude the subwoofer from stereo playback—an option the reviewer wanted.
The Trio also lacks an onboard display. Checking an incoming format such as Dolby Atmos requires opening Bravia Connect, unless a compatible recent Sony TV can show that information on screen.
Before settling on speaker positions, map the available outlets at the front and rear of the listening area and measure the space for the Sub 9.
