Sony Interactive Entertainment is bringing the Japanese-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition to Japan in Midnight Black on November 19, 2026. The new color comes with the same regional limits: the console is designated for domestic use in Japan, its console language is Japanese only, and it requires a PlayStation account whose country/region is Japan.

Snackgirls react
Red: I’d want to put the black console and matching drive together, then reach for a disc game. The matching hardware is what catches my eye.
Nea: I’d start by browsing the PS4 games it supports. An older character-driven game sounds like a lovely first evening with a new console.
Preorders begin October 20 in Japan
The console costs ¥55,000 including tax. Japanese retailers and online stores will begin taking preorders sequentially from October 20, so reservations will not necessarily open everywhere at once.
The CFI-2200B02S model has an 825GB SSD and retains PS4 backward compatibility, with some exceptions.
Disc games need a separate drive—and internet pairing
There is no built-in disc drive. To play disc games, you will need a separate drive; the Midnight Black disc drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, launches on November 19 for ¥11,980 including tax. Pairing the drive with the PS5 requires an internet connection.
The same Japanese SIE announcement also reiterates that newly released PlayStation games will be sold digitally only from January 2028. It says disc games released before January 2028 will remain playable.
