Windows 11 Photos preview brings a unified gallery and rebuilt editor

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Microsoft is rolling out a redesigned Windows 11 Photos experience to Windows Insiders.
  • Gallery brings PC and cloud photos together, while the native Editor gains broader format support and lighting tools.
  • The wider Windows 11 release is planned for later in 2026, with no exact date announced.

Microsoft started the Windows 11 Insider rollout on October 15. The update gives photo collections a new Gallery and rebuilds the native tools used to open and edit individual images.

Snackgirls react

AIKO: I want to see how smoothly Gallery hands a photo to the native editor. Two separate jobs are fine; an extra game of ‘find the window’ would be less fun.

Kirari: I’d start with the golden-hour preset, then move the lights around on a favorite portrait. I want to see how many moods I can get from the same shot.

PC, OneDrive and iCloud in the same gallery

Gallery brings photos and videos from your PC, OneDrive and Apple iCloud into one place. You can browse by date, filter by people and storage location, and organize favorites into albums.

You don’t need to sign in to OneDrive to browse local or iCloud content, and adding local files does not automatically upload them to OneDrive. Photos stored on your PC remain available offline. For iCloud photos, you’ll need to configure Photos in the iCloud for Windows app.

For photos saved in OneDrive, Moments groups related pictures into memories and slideshows that you can share or save as videos. That feature does not extend to the entire local or iCloud collection.

Edit HDR and HEIC photos, then experiment with the lighting

The native Editor has been rebuilt with WinUI 3, with tools grouped into Crop, Enhance, Repair and Stylize. It preserves HDR color and contrast during editing and lets you edit and save HEIC and WebP images in their original formats.

Relight, previously limited to Copilot+ PCs, is expanding to all Windows 11 devices through this rollout. You can position up to three light sources, change their colors and aim them at a shared focus point, or start with a preset such as golden hour.

Object removal remains a separate tool under Repair. Circle or brush over an unwanted object to remove it from the photo.

A faster Viewer, with the wider release still ahead

Opening an image from File Explorer launches the redesigned native Viewer. It supports arrow-key navigation, improved HDR viewing and SVG files, with editing, printing and sharing controls close at hand. The Info panel can show camera details, a color histogram and a location map when location data is available.

Microsoft reports 15% faster Viewer startup on average in controlled tests against Photos version 2026.11060. Actual performance varies by device, configuration and use.

The rollout is starting with Windows Insiders, and Microsoft plans to expand availability to all Windows 11 users later in 2026. There is no exact general-release date yet; look for the Photos update in Microsoft Store when it becomes available to your device.
