AIKO: I’d trace the model choice through each integration. A new name in the chat selector wouldn’t tell me what a separate workflow is set to use.

Red: I’d try a replacement on a small coding project first. I want to know whether it fits my rhythm before handing it the big stuff.

The six retired models and their suggested replacements

First announced on September 18, the retirements cover Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. The announcement concerns support within Copilot, not the model providers ending their own APIs.

Retired model Suggested alternative
Gemini 3.7 Flash Gemini 3.8 Flash
GPT-5.5 GPT-6.1 Sol
GPT-5.4 GPT-6.1 Sol
GPT-5.4 mini GPT-6 Luna
GPT-5 mini GPT-6 Luna
Grok 4.5 Grok 4.7

GitHub lists these as suggested alternatives. The table does not mean your workflows will switch automatically or that a replacement will produce identical results.

Enterprise access may need a policy change

Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable access to an alternative through model policies in Copilot settings. To check availability, review the individual Copilot settings and confirm that the policy is enabled for the specific model. Once enabled, the model appears in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on github.com.

No action is required to remove the retired models manually. That is separate from updating workflows and integrations to use supported models, so check both the configured model choice and any access policy that applies.
