OpenAI models gain a Google Cloud route, starting in private preview

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Google Cloud is bringing OpenAI models and Codex workflows to Model Garden.
  • Eligible customers can connect local Codex workflows and put model usage on their Google Cloud bill.
  • Access is rolling out in private preview to select enterprises; general availability is planned in the coming weeks.

Enterprises using Google Cloud are getting another way to access OpenAI models without arranging a separate model-vendor contract. The partnership brings OpenAI models to Model Garden and lets eligible customers connect existing Codex workflows to Google Cloud for inference. Access is rolling out now, but only in private preview for select enterprise customers.

AIKO: I’d like to trace a local Codex request through Google Cloud. How does that route show up in the unified audit log?

Red: One small game prototype, three models to try—that’s my kind of experiment. I’d like to see which one I click with.

Three models, plus a connection for local Codex

The preview includes GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Google positions Astra for demanding coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research; Sol for agentic coding, computer use and professional work; and Luna for fast, everyday work at scale.

Eligible preview customers can use the models through Google Cloud APIs. They can also connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows directly to Google Cloud’s Gemini platform for inference—in other words, use Google Cloud to handle the model requests behind those coding workflows.

One cloud bill, with data controls attached

OpenAI model purchases go through Google Cloud Marketplace, with usage appearing on a single Google Cloud invoice. Google says the purchases can draw down eligible existing cloud spending commitments and count toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers.

Google also says customer prompts, context and outputs remain within the customer’s designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models. It lists authenticated identities, unified audit logging and VPC Service Controls among the available protections. Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute are coming soon, not features already available with this rollout.

Broader access is planned, not open today

Interested enterprises can request access through OpenAI’s form. OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks, but has not given an exact date.

Access through Google Antigravity is also coming later, separate from the preview’s Codex connection. OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
