SNACK: 3-line summary
- OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra to connect image and screen understanding with actions in browsers, desktops and apps.
- Standard API pricing is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol; the same Work and Codex usage allowance covers more tasks.
- Terra is available in ChatGPT Work, not regular Chat; Copilot access is rolling out gradually and remains subject to organization policies.
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, pairing image and screen understanding with the ability to act in browsers, desktop software and apps. Its standard API pricing is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. It is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex—not regular Chat—with GitHub Copilot access rolling out gradually.

AIKO: If Terra spots something unexpected on screen, when does it stop and ask for permission? That boundary is the part I’d want to examine.
Red: I’d start with a sample invoice and a test form—one small job with a clear finish line. I want to watch the moment it goes from reading the screen to filling the fields.
From reading an invoice to entering its details
OpenAI gives a practical example: reading an incoming invoice and entering its details into accounting software. Terra is designed to interpret what it sees, then carry out the steps needed to complete the task.
Browser and computer-use tools still need the appropriate setup and access. Choosing the model does not make every app compatible or give it unrestricted permission to act.
More work from the same usage allowance
In ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI says the same usage allowance covers more tasks with Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. That is a usage-efficiency benefit, not a reduction in subscription fees or an offer of unlimited use.
Terra is not being positioned as a replacement for the strongest models across every job. OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding tasks.
Where to find Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex
The Codex changelog lists access on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. Select GPT-6.1 Terra from the Advanced model list in the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT Work on the web; Work also supports it on mobile.
Enterprise access depends on workspace availability and administrator controls. Terra does not support UAE inference residency. Developers can also access it through the OpenAI API using the model ID gpt-6.1-terra.
Copilot access is arriving gradually
GitHub lists Terra for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users, with model selection across tools including VS Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI and GitHub Mobile. The rollout is gradual, so eligible users may not see it immediately.
Business and Enterprise administrators can manage access through Copilot’s model policy. New models are enabled automatically under the default policy unless an administrator has switched off global default enablement or disabled Terra specifically.
GitHub says Terra is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. If it has not appeared in the model picker, rollout timing and organization policy are the first things to check.
