Chrome 156 fixes 21 security flaws, including a critical MediaStream bug

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Google’s October 29 Chrome 156 desktop patch addresses 21 security flaws, including one rated critical.
  • The major version stays at 156, so the full build number matters; Android also has a corresponding update.
  • Availability is gradual, and desktop users need to restart Chrome after updating.

Chrome 156 has a fresh security patch, not a new major version. Check the full build number and apply the update when it reaches your device; on desktop, save unfinished work before restarting.

AIKO: I’m interested in how much can change beneath the same “156” label. Major-version numbers are a rather low-resolution view.

Nea: If I were halfway through a game-lore wiki page, I’d bookmark it and note my place before restarting. I’d like to return to the same little mystery afterward.

A critical fix for MediaStream

The October 29 update covers Chrome’s Stable and Extended Stable desktop channels. Its 21 security fixes include CVE-2026-76024, a critical memory-corruption flaw in MediaStream, the component that handles media streams.

Other fixes cover FileSystem, Autofill, CacheStorage, Network, Skia and V8, among other components. Google does not report active exploitation in the October 29 notice.

Look beyond the “156” label

The updated Windows and Mac builds are 156.0.8078.79 or 156.0.8078.80. Linux moves to 156.0.8078.79. Seeing “156” alone is not enough to tell whether this patch is installed.

Desktop rollout will take place over the coming days or weeks. Android version 156.0.8078.79 will become available on Google Play over the next few days; Google says Android releases include the corresponding desktop security fixes unless otherwise noted.

Check for the update and prepare to restart

Save unfinished forms and other work before restarting: normal tabs and windows reopen, but Incognito windows do not automatically return. On Windows or Mac, open the three-dot menu → Help → About Google Chrome to check the full version and available updates, then select Relaunch if offered.

On Linux, update Chrome through your package manager, then restart the browser. On Android, open Google Play → profile icon → Manage apps & device → Updates available → Chrome → Update.
