Red Store updates make me more tempted to give an old phone a music-only job. I’d rather queue up songs than remember to fetch the next APK.

Nea I’d like to make a long game-soundtrack playlist. With the albums tagged by their original release years, browsing them could feel like revisiting the series in order.

Play Store updates, including for APK installations

On devices that can use Google Play, reTONE can now be installed from its Play Store listing, with subsequent updates delivered through the store.

The developer says an APK-installed copy can also be updated in place through the Play Store, retaining settings and playlists. Older devices that cannot use Google Play, such as those running Android 4.x, should continue using the official APK.

0.92.10 fixes a problem with large playlists

Version 0.92.10 fixes an issue that caused the app to stop when opening large .m3u files, which store playlists.

The mini-player now shows the artwork for the track currently playing. Albums are also sorted using the year stored in their tags.

Still free, still in beta

reTONE is a free, ad-free local music player for ARM-based Android phones and tablets running Android 4.0 or later. It remains in beta, and some functions may not work on every device. That Android support baseline does not guarantee access to its Google Play listing.

APK downloads for manual updates remain available on the official release page. Android 4.0 cannot use the app’s built-in update check, so users on that version need to check the page for new releases.
