Xbox Wire has announced that it is starting an ad-supported game streaming test. The test is aimed at Xbox Insiders, and lets users stream some games they own through their Xbox account for free after watching an ad.
The official post explains that it will be available on supported devices and in supported regions during the test period. In other words, this is not a full service open to all users right away, but an experiment with limited conditions.
There are three conditions
First, an ad plays before the session starts. Second, Xbox Wire explained that the core gameplay experience does not change. Third, this method is optional, and users can continue choosing other ways to play.
The most noticeable restriction is the one-hour session. Rather than a way to play long games continuously, it feels closer to briefly trying owned games or letting Xbox One users check out newer games through the cloud.
Why this experiment is worth watching
Ad-supported streaming takes a different approach from the Game Pass subscription model. Since it lowers the entry cost in exchange for watching ads, it may have meaning for readers who only “occasionally turn on” cloud gaming.
That said, for it to have real value, supported regions, eligible games, ad length, and session restart conditions will matter. For now, it is still in the testing stage, so it is better to see it not as a confirmed full service, but as an early signal that Xbox is broadening its approach to cloud access.
