Nea: I like that the anniversary is looking ahead instead of stopping at nostalgia. Dragon Quest XII still being part of that future makes the celebration feel unfinished in a good way.

Dragon Quest has passed 100 million units during its 40th-anniversary year. Square Enix says the worldwide figure covers cumulative package shipments and digital sales across the franchise, rather than sales of a single title.
What the 100 million total includes
Digital sales are counted from April 2015 and include full-game downloads of both packaged and download-only console and PC titles. The milestone is therefore a franchise-wide shipment and sales total, not a player count, sell-through figure, or revenue measurement.
Four decades of adventures
The first Dragon Quest launched in Japan in 1986. The series now spans 11 mainline games, numerous spin-offs, and other media. Creator Yuji Horii thanked players in a short celebration message and said the team will continue working to deliver exciting adventures.
The next journeys are already lined up
Square Enix lists Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams as currently in development. Dragon Quest XI S is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026, while Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is due on December 3, 2026.
