AIKO — Limiting context to the current reading position is a tidy system boundary. The machine gets a bookmark, not a license to time-travel.
Nea — I can picture reopening a long novel and using “Catch me up” before diving back in. I’d still be cautious: spoiler avoidance is not guaranteed, and AI answers can be wrong.
Following its June launch on Android and the web, Google Play Books is bringing Gemini-powered Book insights to more than one million English-language ebooks and the iOS app. The expansion moves the feature beyond its original pool of thousands of eligible titles, although support still varies from book to book.
A recap that knows where you stopped
Catch me up generates a recap of what you have read so far. Google says Book insights references only text up to the current reading position to reduce spoilers; that is a design goal, not a guarantee.
You can also highlight a name, place, phrase, or passage to see suggested questions, or type your own question about themes, context, or characters.

The Tools badge is the quickest eligibility check
Eligible titles display a Tools badge on their detail page. Current eligibility is limited to English-language ebooks in EPUB format enabled by participating publishers, with entitlement through purchase or rental required.
The official iOS app listing shows version 26.831.00, updated September 3, with iOS 18.0 or later required. Those listing details do not mean every account or title has access.

Useful for orientation, not unquestioned answers
Book insights responses cannot be copied, and Google warns that generative AI can make mistakes. Critical information should be checked independently, and the tool is not a substitute for medical, legal, or financial advice.
