Sonos 27 starts rolling out portable surrounds and redesigned app navigation on September 8. The headline feature lets two matching Sonos Move 2 speakers or two matching Sonos Play speakers become rear surrounds when moved into position. Owners who already have a compatible pair and an eligible Sonos home-theater setup may be able to use it without buying new speakers.
The speakers change roles when you move them
Sonos Positioning Technology uses high-frequency sound to sense where the speakers are and change their role in the system. The feature requires a pair, so one Move 2 or Sonos Play cannot serve as a portable rear surround on its own.
Sonos says the operating-system update reaches all Sonos S2 products, but individual features remain limited to compatible hardware. Check the updated app for rollout availability and compatibility before rearranging your setup.
Rooms, search and volume move closer to hand
The updated app places Home, system and search tabs along the bottom and adds room sorting. An iOS-first virtual volume knob responds to a two-finger gesture.
Sonos 27mcp also enters Early Access on September 8. It can connect existing AI models to compatible Sonos products for device control, making it a secondary option alongside the more immediate speaker and app changes.

AIKO A speaker sensing its position and changing jobs is the clever part. The two-finger volume knob also makes app control feel more like handling a physical dial.
Red I want to carry two speakers behind the sofa and watch them turn into rear channels. Rearranging the room has rarely sounded this playful.
