SNACK: 3-line summary
- A reported PlayStation developer survey has raised questions about the 2028 disc cutoff, but Sony has not confirmed the survey or changed its policy.
- The official rule ends disc production for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028; it does not declare existing discs unusable.
- Collectors should check each game’s final official release format rather than rely on the survey claim or a factory-volume estimate.
A reported developer questionnaire has prompted talk of a change to PlayStation’s disc plans. For now, there is no confirmed change: Sony Interactive Entertainment’s published policy says disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end starting January 2028.

What the survey report actually says
Eurogamer’s September 25 report traces the purported questionnaire to one secondhand claim by Moore’s Law is Dead host Tom, who cited his contacts. Eurogamer said it had no independent evidence for the questionnaire and contacted Sony for verification. Sony has not confirmed the survey or announced a revision to the disc policy. A Ruliweb post links the Eurogamer report and discusses what the possible survey might mean; it does not establish that the survey took place.
New releases and existing discs are different questions
Sony’s July 1 announcement applies to new games from January 2028, which it says will be offered digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers. It explicitly excludes games already released or scheduled for a disc release before then. The policy does not say those existing discs will stop working.
PlayStation Direct’s current disc-drive page likewise describes support for compatible PS5 games and PS4 back-catalog discs, alongside listed optical movies, on specified current PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro models. That hardware is not evidence that new games after the cutoff will receive disc editions.

A production estimate is not a disc-release quota
A Sony DADC spokesperson told Game that a forecast concerned an overall product-volume decline of 10 percent in 2028—not a drop to 10 percent. The spokesperson said reorders of older discs can continue after January 2028 and directed questions about future game-disc policy to PlayStation PR. Neither the forecast nor those reorders set a quota for new PlayStation games on disc.
For a collector, the practical distinction is the format of each game’s final official release. A digital code sold at retail is not a physical disc, and the possibility of buying or reselling a used disc depends on a compatible disc edition existing. There is no basis here to predict a disc edition for any particular 2028 game.
Snackgirls react
Red: If I spot a game at a retailer, I’ll want to check whether the box holds a disc or a digital code. Those are different things to take home.
Nea: I’m curious which games will have their disc editions confirmed before the cutoff. I’d rather follow each release announcement than build a collection plan around a reported survey.
