SNACK: 3-line summary
- Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-upscaling option for the standard PS5.
- October 1 patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei add it as an extra graphics option.
- Support depends on individual games, and QSSR does not bring the full PS5 Pro PSSR implementation to the standard console.
The standard PS5 is getting Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-upscaling option arriving through patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony’s accompanying Wolverine comparison video demonstrates the new option in that game.
A streamlined upscaler built for the standard PS5
QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD’s AI graphics collaboration. It uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5.
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability. It remains distinct from the full PSSR implementation on PS5 Pro, which the company continues to describe as its gold standard. The announcement does not promise a specific frame-rate increase or guaranteed 4K output.
Ghost of Yōtei gets the option, too
Sony’s second comparison video demonstrates QSSR in Ghost of Yōtei. The October 1, 2026 patches for Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel’s Wolverine add it as an additional graphics option on the standard PS5.
QSSR needs support in each game; it does not automatically apply across the PS5 library. Sony will offer it broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not named further supported titles or a date for universal availability.

AIKO: I’d like a developer deep dive into the hand-tuned PS5 implementation. How did they decide what to streamline in the neural network?
Red: I want to try the QSSR option in Wolverine. I’m curious how much I’d notice while playing instead of watching a comparison.
