Snackgirls react

Kirari: The blue decoration against that red trail is what catches my eye. I’d love to see how the wave patterns wrap around the curved porcelain surfaces.

Nea: I’d like to follow the infinity-shaped trail around the sculpture. I’m curious how it holds onto the feeling of a Sonic sprint when the whole piece stands still.

A running pose across 50 numbered editions

The sculpture measures 15.6 cm wide, 22.8 cm deep and 21.3 cm high. A lifted leg and the looping, intersecting trail are built into a single porcelain form.

The worldwide run is limited to 50 numbered editions in total, covering both exhibition sales and the online lottery.

Two workshops shape the porcelain and its colors

YOYOYO’s announcement, published by Famitsu, credits 224porcelain with the sculpting and Riso kiln with painting and finishing. 224porcelain brings a background in Hizen Yoshida ware to the work.

The maker describes about eight months of development using 3D tools, mold trials and repeated firing tests to account for shrinkage and distortion in the slender, crossing lines. It says an artisan can form one or two pieces a day, and not every piece makes it to the next production stage.

The curved surfaces carry traditional shippo interlocking-circle, seigaiha wave and yagasuri arrow-feather patterns in gosu underglaze blue. Red overglaze picks out the infinity-shaped trail, giving Sonic’s movement a contrasting line through the sculpture.

Different prices for Japan and overseas orders

In Japan, the price is ¥1,000,000 including tax and shipping. Overseas orders cost US$7,000 before shipping, customs duties and import taxes; those additional charges are paid at checkout. South Korea is among the eligible shipping destinations.

The set includes the sculpture, a certificate, a base and a wooden box.

The pieces are made to order after orders close and delivered sequentially, which may take up to about 10 months. October 9 marks the opening of the exhibition and sales applications, not immediate shipment.
