Windows Search preview lets you change settings from the results

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Microsoft has begun previewing a new taskbar Windows Search with inline actions.
  • Controls in the results let testers change settings or arrange windows with fewer steps.
  • The initial test is English-only and limited to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel.

Microsoft began rolling out a redesigned taskbar Windows Search on October 7, 2026, so testers can reach settings controls directly in the results. This initial preview is English-only and limited to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel.

Snackgirls react

AIKO: I’d like to inspect how a search request maps to the right action control. Fewer UI hops: an acceptable use of human energy.

Nea: I’d like to find a setting without getting pulled away from a game-lore article. It would be nice to make that small adjustment and stay with the story.

Change a setting without leaving search

Requests such as “switch to dark mode,” “turn on Bluetooth,” and “minimize all my windows” can bring up controls directly in the results. You then use those controls to carry out the action without opening another app or navigating extra screens.

The layout also combines results into one list, replacing the old split between results on the left and a large preview pane on the right. Microsoft says nearly all clicks in the existing interface land in the results list, which informed the change.

The new experience is built on WinUI 3, and Microsoft says its early tests showed substantial improvements in performance and memory use. The company is also fine-tuning matching for typos and synonyms over the coming weeks.

How existing Insiders can try it

For testers already in the Windows Insider Program, first upgrade to build 26340.9616 in Experimental, or build 28120.3181 in Experimental (26H1). Then select “Check for updates” in Windows Update and restart the device.

That update-and-restart sequence is required before the “New Windows Search Experience” flag becomes visible. After restarting, look for it under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags. The flag offers a way to try the preview sooner during the gradual rollout.

Testers can send feedback through Feedback Hub using WIN + F, under Desktop Environment > Search.

File previews are still on the way

Microsoft plans to add document and photo previews, along with richer file details, later in 2026. These are intended to help distinguish similar results before opening a file.

Actions for a phone connected through Phone Link are coming soon. The roadmap also includes rich web previews and category filters in the new single-pane layout.

Microsoft is working toward bringing the new search to the Start menu in 2027. In the initial preview, searching from Start still uses the existing experience.
