Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 and Max ease level setup—except on Volt 1 Gen 2

SNACK: 3-line summary

SNACK in 3 lines

  • Universal Audio has introduced six Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max USB recording interfaces.
  • Auto-Gain reduces level-setting steps on Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2 and all Max models; Volt 1 Gen 2 lacks it.
  • Choose by microphone-input count and whether you want the Max models’ onboard compression.

For a first vocal or guitar recording, Universal Audio’s new Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max interfaces can reduce the steps spent setting input levels. Auto-Gain sets the recording level, while Clip Protection helps manage unexpected peaks. Both features and the Smart Display are included on Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2 and all three Max models, but not Volt 1 Gen 2.

Red I want to try all three tone modes on the same guitar part. Choosing the character before hitting record sounds like a fun part of setting up.

Nea For a quiet vocal-and-acoustic song, I’d want the opening to stay intimate. I’m curious how the Max presets would handle the voice getting stronger later.

Three preamp tones, with compression reserved for Max

The original Volt range offered a Vintage preamp mode, with 76 compression on selected models. All six new interfaces have three Tone Shaping choices. UA describes Warmth as inspired by its 610 tube preamp, Focus by an American solid-state console, and Shine by British Class-A circuitry.

Volt 2 Max, Volt 4 Max and Volt 4P Max also include Max Processing: six onboard compression presets based on 1176, LA-2A and VCA compressor designs. Compression reduces variations in level; presets such as Rap Vocal and Jangly Acoustic offer starting points without asking a beginner to set every compressor parameter. The three Gen 2 models do not include Max Processing.

Start with the inputs you actually need

For a vocal mic and guitar together, Volt 2 Gen 2 is a starting point if Auto-Gain matters. It has two preamps, as do Volt 4 Gen 2, Volt 2 Max and Volt 4 Max. Choose a Max model if you want onboard compression, or Volt 4P Max if you need four mic preamps.

audioXpress’s October 5 report lists US minimum advertised pricing (MAP) from US$149 for the range. That is an entry price, not a quote for Volt 2 Gen 2 or a Max model; the entry-level Volt 1 Gen 2 has one preamp and lacks Auto-Gain, Clip Protection and the display.

The interfaces use USB bus power and support compatible computer, tablet and phone connections. Lightning-equipped iPhones and iPads require an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. LUNA for Mac and Windows and the UAD Volt Studio Bundle are included.

If your current interface meets your needs, 32-bit/192kHz A/D and D/A conversion alone need not prompt an upgrade. It does not mean 32-bit float recording or guarantee recovery of clipped audio. Check the actual inputs and device compatibility, then look to recording reviews to hear how the tone options suit your material.
