Famicom USB-C power gets a longer 1.8m cable

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • SSA Service has released the SU2-TCDC180M, a 1.8m USB-C power cable for compatible retro consoles.
  • Its USB-C male plug removes the need to add a separate USB-C lead to the older 10cm adapter.
  • A separate USB PD charger rated 45W or higher is required; centre-positive machines, including Twin Famicom, are unsupported.

SSA Service’s new SU2-TCDC180M brings a longer USB-C power connection to compatible retro consoles such as the Japanese Famicom. It requires a separate USB PD charger rated 45W or higher and hardware compatible with its centre-negative DC plug—not simply any console the connector fits.

Snackgirls react

Red: I’d like to try that single long lead with a compatible Famicom and get a game going. Seeing how it fits into the setup is part of the fun.

Nea: I like the thought of keeping an original console in use. I’d probably end up reading about that particular model’s history before settling on a game.

From a 10cm adapter to a 1.8m lead

The earlier SU2-TCDC10M was a 10cm adapter with a USB-C female socket. The new 1.8m model has a USB-C male plug, so there is no separate USB-C lead to add. It carries power only: it is not a data or video adapter, and it does not add a USB-C port to the console.

45W describes the required charger

The charger requirement does not mean the console consumes 45W. The charger must be supplied separately, and that wattage rating alone does not establish that every USB PD charger will work with the cable and console.

The compatibility list comes from the older model

AKIBA PC Hotline! lists the Japanese Famicom, New Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, PC Engine and Sega Master System as tested with the older SU2-TCDC10M. Retailer Kaden no Ken-chan says the new cable works similarly. That is a retailer’s compatibility statement, not a blanket guarantee covering other regional versions.

Twin Famicom and other centre-positive devices are unsupported. The package warns that connecting with the wrong polarity may damage the console.

The reported Japanese shop price is 1,390 yen. Before connecting the cable, confirm the exact console model, polarity and power specifications, along with the charger’s output specifications. If compatibility is uncertain, leave it unplugged.
