SNACK: 3-line summary
- The original English Base Set Chansey combines coin-flip defense with a self-damaging attack.
- Scrunch prevents damage only on heads, during the opponent’s next turn; other attack effects still happen.
- Double-edge costs four Colorless Energy and deals 80 damage to its target and 80 to Chansey itself.
The original English Base Set Chansey (3/102) has a blunt trade-off printed on Double-edge: 80 damage to its target and 80 to Chansey itself. Its defensive attack, Scrunch, cannot prevent that self-damage.

Snackgirls react
Kirari: The round body, tiny hands and egg catch my eye first. I’d happily linger over the artwork before getting to those rather unfriendly attacks!
Nea: I’m drawn to the choice between the two attacks. A coin flip asks me to take a chance; Double-edge asks me to accept the self-damage.
Scrunch needs heads—and other attack effects still happen
Scrunch costs two Colorless Energy and asks you to flip a coin. On heads, it prevents all damage done to Chansey during your opponent’s next turn. On tails, Scrunch provides no protection.
Even on heads, other effects of attacks still happen. The protection covers damage during that turn; it does not heal Chansey or make it immune to every attack effect.
Double-edge has no coin flip
Double-edge costs four Colorless Energy, and its printed self-damage does not depend on a coin toss. Scrunch’s protection applies during the opponent’s next turn, not during Chansey’s own attack, so the two moves do not offer a way around the recoil.
