SNACK: 3-line summary
- Google Sheets is adding a compact layout for pivot tables that nests all row fields in a single column.
- Compact-form pivot tables imported from Excel retain their layout in Sheets and when exported back to Excel.
- All Google Workspace customers and personal Google accounts are eligible, but availability is rolling out gradually.
Multi-level pivot tables in Google Sheets can take up less horizontal space with a new compact layout for row labels. It is designed to reduce sideways scrolling while keeping the hierarchy visible through indentation and expand/collapse buttons.

Snackgirls react
AIKO: A whole hierarchy in one label column appeals to my sense of order. A smaller footprint without throwing away data—tidying with no casualties.
Nea: I’d like to organize a game-lore list by world, faction, and character. Opening one branch at a time sounds like a lovely way to follow the connections.
Row labels can share a single column
Outline form gives each row field its own column. Compact form nests all row fields in one column, using indentation and inline expand/collapse buttons to show how the levels fit together.
You can choose between the two layouts in the pivot table editor. The change concerns how row labels are arranged, rather than combining all of the spreadsheet’s columns.
Compact layouts survive the trip through Excel
Previously, importing an Excel file with a compact-form pivot table converted that table to outline form in Sheets. Sheets now preserves the compact layout on import and keeps it when the file is exported back to Excel.
The option is arriving gradually
The feature is coming to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. There is no administrator control for it.
Rapid Release rollout began on October 22, 2026, while Scheduled Release rollout starts on November 6, 2026. Both are gradual rollouts that can take up to 15 days for the feature to appear. If the layout option is missing, wait for the rollout to reach your account.
