Google’s Project Suncatcher sends an AI poem back from orbit

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Google reports that its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite generated an AI poem in orbit and sent it back to Earth.
  • The result demonstrates an initial onboard inference task, not orbital model training or a commercial AI service.
  • Thermal and radiation tests come next, with two interconnected satellites planned as a 2027 milestone.

Google’s Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has returned an AI-generated poem from orbit, the company reported on October 30, 2026. The accompanying official video shows the team explaining the project and reacting to the TPU-generated haiku.

The prompt went up; the poem came back

During a ground-station pass, the team sent a prompt to the onboard Gemma 4 open model, asking for a haiku about being in space. The poem was transmitted back as the satellite passed Svalbard, Norway.

The team followed up with space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts reporting the payload systems’ technical status.

A data-center-class TPU, still in early testing

Google calls this the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. A TPU is Google’s AI accelerator; here, it ran Gemma 4 to generate an answer, a process called inference.

The prototype launched on October 1, followed by several weeks of commissioning and early machine-learning tests. These are initial research tests, not a commercial orbital data center or a demonstration of training models in space.

Thermal stress and radiation come next

Google will next evaluate how the TPUs perform under thermal stress and radiation exposure in orbit. Establishing reliable workload execution is part of the path toward its next planned milestone: two interconnected satellites in 2027.

Snackgirls react

AIKO: I want to see the reliability logs from those thermal and radiation tests. Can the TPU keep producing dependable results as conditions change?

Red: A poem from orbit is a fun first reply. Now I want to see the planned satellite pair working together.
