Sony MDR-3R revives the original Walkman headphone look with USB-C

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Sony has introduced the MDR-3R, bringing the first Walkman headphone look to wired USB-C on-ears.
  • The standard model is on sale in the US for $59.99; the $79.99 Stranger Things Edition is open for preorders.
  • Your device needs USB Audio Class 1.0 support, and a USB-C port alone does not guarantee every function will work.

Sony’s MDR-3R takes its look from the MDR-3 headphone family introduced alongside the first Walkman in 1979. Announced on November 5, 2026, the new wired on-ear model replaces the old 3.5mm plug with USB-C and adds a microphone for calls and an in-line remote.

Snackgirls react

Red If my gaming setup supports it, I’d love to plug in and get straight into a game. One less pairing menu to deal with.

Nea I’d start with the vocal tracks from a favorite game soundtrack. I’m curious how Sony’s retro-inspired tuning would handle those familiar voices.

Both earpad colors come in the box

A slim metal headband and foam earpads keep the familiar silhouette. Both blue and orange pad sets come with the standard model, while the packaging and instruction manual also echo the original styling.

Sony says it re-engineered the 23mm drivers using the original design specifications, aiming for a sound close to the MDR-3 with subtle refinements for modern listening tastes.

The open acoustic design lets some sound escape, Sony told What Hi-Fi?, so that is worth considering if you plan to listen in quiet shared spaces.

A USB-C socket is only part of the compatibility check

The headphones are designed for devices that support USB Audio Class 1.0. A USB-C port alone does not guarantee full functionality: depending on the connected device, operating system and app, you may need to change settings, and some functions may not work properly.

No charging or pairing is required. Despite the retro styling, Sony does not recommend using the MDR-3R with a Walkman.

Stranger Things gets a red-and-black edition

The Netflix collaboration brings an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black earpads, and custom packaging to the MDR-3R.

In the US, Sony’s November 5 announcement lists the standard model as available now at a suggested retail price of $59.99. The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition is available to preorder for $79.99.
