SNACK: 3-line summary
- Cloudflare introduced Web Search API through AI Gateway to supply AI applications with fresh web context.
- Developers can use REST or a Workers binding, alongside Gateway billing, logs and support for their own provider keys.
- Built-in Server Tools are planned; check the selected provider’s retention policy before sending sensitive queries.
Cloudflare announced Web Search API through AI Gateway on October 2, giving developers building assistants or websites a way to retrieve newer web information for their models. Those sources can help with recent releases and changing documentation, but they do not guarantee a correct answer.

Snackgirls react
Nea: I’d want to follow a lore detail back to its source and read the surrounding passage. A short answer can leave me with a much longer reading list.
AIKO: I’d label retrieved snippets separately from the model’s own additions. New context is not new training—a useful distinction when debugging an answer.
Fresh web context from three search providers
The launch starts with Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup. Their search results supply fresh, structured web snippets that an application can pass to its model, including documentation or releases that may be missing from its training data.
This is a developer integration, not a consumer search engine or a switch that gives every chatbot browsing. It retrieves public-web information and serves a different role from Cloudflare AI Search’s document indexing.
Connect an existing app, or use Workers
A REST endpoint and a Workers binding are available now. Existing backends, mobile apps and external services can send authenticated REST requests specifying a search provider. Developers building on Cloudflare Workers can use the dedicated web-search binding.

Search joins Gateway billing and logs
Search requests can draw from AI Gateway credits, appear in its normal observability logs and use its access controls. Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) is also supported for search providers. Cloudflare says it offers its partners’ list API pricing without extra markup.
Cloudflare says the launch partners have committed to its Verified Bots requirements: identifying their crawlers, respecting robots.txt and providing links back to crawled content in search results. Those links give readers somewhere to check the material behind an answer.
Check retention before connecting an assistant
Cloudflare says it will identify partners that support Zero Data Retention (ZDR). Do not assume that protection applies to every provider; check the chosen provider’s policy before sending sensitive information.
Native Server Tools inside AI Gateway are still planned. Developers can already orchestrate web search as a tool themselves, but the built-in version was described as coming soon. To try the available API, start with Cloudflare’s developer documentation or AI Playground using an AI Gateway account and key.
