Astell&Kern’s PD5 is a standalone digital audio player (DAP), due to launch in Japan on October 17, 2026. It lets you choose between four active DAC chips for longer listening and an eight-chip mode that Astell&Kern describes as offering greater resolution and immersive spatial sound.

Four DACs for longer sessions
The PD5 contains eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips. Quad mode runs four to improve power efficiency, while Octa mode uses all eight. Astell&Kern quotes maximum continuous playback of about 28 hours in Quad mode and about 15 hours in Octa mode.
The 28-hour figure was measured using 44.1kHz/16-bit FLAC files, volume set to 50, the display off and the unbalanced output. Actual runtime depends on usage and settings; that figure is not a promise of 28 hours of streaming or listening through the balanced output.
A separate feature, EnviroTune, uses a microphone on top of the player to analyze ambient noise and adjust frequency bands that the noise can mask. This is sound correction, not active noise cancellation (ANC): it does not cancel outside noise or guarantee hearing safety. EnviroTune supports PCM audio up to 192kHz/24-bit.
Streaming apps or a local music library
Full Android OS allows app installation, and the PD5 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. Streaming service availability, account and subscription requirements, and network needs remain dependent on the app.
For local music files, there is 64GB of internal storage, including space used by the system. A microSD slot supports cards up to 2TB, sold separately.
The approximately 198g player has a 4.1-inch curved touchscreen, a 3.5mm unbalanced headphone output and a 4.4mm balanced output. Use the connection that matches your headphone cable’s plug.
The Silver model is priced at ¥176,000 including tax in Japan, placing it in the premium-player bracket rather than the budget-starter range. A TPU case is included; the PU-leather PD5 Case is a separate accessory.
