Red I’d like to record footsteps passing the camera in my next video and hear how their direction comes through on playback.
Nea I’d like to replay a place’s ambient sounds on headphones and listen for the little details that give it an atmosphere, much like a game’s soundtrack does.
Choose a recording mode for the way people will listen
The spherical microphone module contains four omnidirectional microphones. Its three recording modes serve different playback needs:
- Ambisonics: Uses four channels to capture surrounding sound with information about its direction. This first-order ambisonics mode requires Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app.
- Binaural: Two-channel recording optimized for headphones. It can convey a spatial impression without requiring support for the Eclipsa Audio spatial-audio format.
- Stereo: The general-purpose option for playback through either headphones or speakers.
Binaural and stereo recording can also be used outside Sony’s dedicated app, although compatibility with every app is not guaranteed.

Check phone support before buying
The ECM-AX10 is scheduled to launch in Japan on October 23, 2026. Sony estimates a tax-inclusive retail price of around 30,000 yen. It is an open-price product, so individual stores determine the actual selling price.
Sony lists iOS and Android support for Spatial Audio Video Tool as planned. The app is designed to handle video capture, clip review, basic editing and video export. 4K recording is planned from December 2026 onward, rather than at launch.
Video quality and some features depend on the phone, and certain devices may not record video normally in some shooting conditions. Check Sony’s list of tested phones before buying—a USB-C port alone does not establish compatibility.
