- What Hi-Fi?’s October 6 review praises the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1i HCP’s natural dialogue and cohesive 5.1 sound.
- The £999 UK review price covers the speaker package, not an AV amplifier or the four stands.
- Plan speaker positions, cable routes and the full budget; compare simpler soundbars first if easy installation matters most.
In its review published on October 6, 2026, What Hi-Fi? praised the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1i HCP’s cohesive surround sound. For a beginner weighing it against a simple soundbar, the setup needs planning: this 5.1 speaker package requires a separate AV amplifier, speaker wiring and room for four stands.

Red I’d keep turning the camera just to hear game sounds move from front to rear. That’s the bit I want to try.
Nea The praise for natural dialogue has me curious about quieter film scenes. I’d like to hear the small shifts in a voice amid the music and background atmosphere.
Familiar drivers, with changes to the bass port
What Hi-Fi? highlighted natural film dialogue, convincing continuity as sound moves between the front and surround speakers, and controlled bass. In its test room, moving the initially lean-sounding front speakers closer to the wall added warmth—a placement example, not a guaranteed fix for every room.
Wharfedale says the revised bass-reflex port and internal damping are intended to improve bass clarity and control. The Diamond 12.1i retains its 130mm Klarity polypropylene-and-mica mid/bass driver and 25mm textile-dome tweeter.
The finishes are All-black, Stone Grey and Classic Walnut. The SW10 subwoofer is unchanged from the older package, so the update does not replace every component.

Make room for the speakers and the extra costs
The package contains four Diamond 12.1i bookshelf speakers—two for the front and two for surround duties—plus one centre speaker and one SW10 powered subwoofer. The “5.1” means five main speaker channels plus a subwoofer, not six identical speakers. No height speakers are included.
The five main speakers are passive and need an external AV amplifier and speaker cables. The powered subwoofer does not make this a wireless system, and an AV amplifier is not supplied.
What Hi-Fi? tested the package at £999 in the UK, the same UK price as the previous Diamond 12.1 HCP according to the review. Four stands are not included, so their cost and footprint need to sit alongside the amplifier in your setup plan.
Start by checking front and surround positions and where the speaker cables can run, then work out the total budget. If straightforward installation is your priority, compare simpler soundbars first. Existing Diamond 12.1 HCP owners can try to audition the changes before replacing a system solely for the new finishes.
