Bluetooth plans a high-res, lossless audio standard for 2027

SNACK: 3-line summary

SNACK in 3 lines

  • Bluetooth SIG plans a standard for high-resolution, lossless wireless audio in 2027.
  • Bluetooth LE High Data Throughput (HDT), targeted for November 2026, would provide the faster data link behind it.
  • Compatible phones and headphones remain unannounced, with more details planned for CES 2027 in January.

Bluetooth SIG outlined plans for a high-resolution, lossless wireless audio standard at its October 15 briefing in Tokyo, targeting 2027. If you are shopping for earbuds now, compatibility is still an open question: the announcement does not establish whether phones or headphones bought today will support it.

Red Give me a compatible phone and headphones—I want to try that HDT link myself. I’m curious to see the demo move beyond development boards.

Nea I’d like to listen to a familiar game soundtrack on future compatible gear. I’d linger over the strings and the quieter passages.

A faster Bluetooth link is targeted for November

AV Watch and PHILE WEB report that Bluetooth LE High Data Throughput (HDT) is planned for November 2026. The audio standard would follow as an enhancement to LE Audio on the 2027 roadmap. These are technology and standardization targets, not retail product release dates.

Bluetooth SIG’s official CEATEC 2026 page lists a maximum supported bit rate of 7.5Mbps for HDT and a broader specification adoption target of late 2026. Mbps describes the data transmission rate; it is different from an audio sampling rate expressed in kHz. The maximum supported rate is not a measured speed that every connection will reach.

What the 96kHz/24-bit demonstration tells us

High-resolution Bluetooth audio is already available through proprietary codecs such as LDAC and aptX Adaptive. Bluetooth SIG is now planning a standardized approach. Neither existing codec name guarantees bit-perfect, lossless delivery in every mode.

AV Watch reports that Bestechnic demonstrated transmission of a 96kHz/24-bit high-resolution source over Bluetooth LE HDT at the venue, using a development-board setup. This was a technology demonstration, not an independent listening test of retail headphones. The source format alone does not prove lossless delivery from end to end under all conditions.

Wait for device support if the new standard matters to you

PHILE WEB reports that codec details have not been disclosed. Compatible consumer models, release dates and update eligibility for existing devices are also unannounced. A Bluetooth version number alone does not establish future support.

Bluetooth SIG plans to reveal more at CES 2027 in January, including a new premium wireless audio announcement. That does not promise compatible headphones will ship during the show.

If your current earbuds work well, this roadmap alone gives you no reason to replace them. If support for the new standard is a priority, wait for the specifications and explicit compatibility announcements for both the phone and headphones you intend to use. If you need something sooner, choose for the features available today.
