SNACK: 3-line summary
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation will let players select Hard Mode from the beginning of their first playthrough.
- The difficulty is being reworked for Revelation, without the traditional ban on using items.
- FITS will expand character roles and party-building options while preserving each character’s identity.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will let you choose Hard Mode without completing the game first. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the change in a Tokyo Game Show interview published by Hardcore Gamer on October 18, opening that option to players who want a tougher first playthrough.

Hard Mode no longer waits for the credits
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth unlocked Hard Mode after a completed playthrough. Hamaguchi said Revelation’s high-difficulty option is being reimagined around this game’s design, and the traditional restriction on using items will not carry over.
There are also plans for varied postgame content, rather than relying solely on a second run through Hard Mode. Dynamic Mode is returning too: Hamaguchi said it can still offer highly strategic battles even when characters and enemies are fully leveled.
Snackgirls react
Red: I want that first boss to make me work for it. Let me start on Hard Mode and figure out the fight as I go.
Nea: I’m curious how far FITS will let me reshape a favorite character’s role while keeping them recognizable. I could spend quite a while exploring those combinations.
More room to reshape a party with FITS
Hamaguchi described FITS as a way to expand and tailor character roles while keeping each character’s identity intact. The aim is to give players more room to experiment with builds and party combinations without making the characters lose their individual qualities.
The combat will continue to build on the existing combination of real-time action and command-based RPG decisions. According to Hamaguchi, ATB remains central to its strategic depth.
Hardcore Gamer’s interview lists Final Fantasy VII Revelation for an April 8, 2027 release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
