SNACK: 3-line summary
- Original English POP Series 5 Espeon Star can leave both Active Pokémon Confused, including your own.
- Purple Ray is optional and can be used when you play the card from your hand onto your Bench.
- Its separate Psychic Boom attack adds damage for each Energy attached to the Defending Pokémon.
Playing the original English POP Series 5 Espeon Star (16/17) from your hand onto your Bench can leave your own Active Pokémon Confused, alongside your opponent’s. That is the optional Purple Ray Poké-POWER at work; the newly Benched Espeon Star is not a target.

Snackgirls react
Kirari: That’s one way to steal the spotlight from the Bench. I’d be cheering Espeon’s entrance, then apologizing to my own Active Pokémon!
Nea: The option to leave Purple Ray unused is what draws me to this old design. I’d want to think about when I’d actually choose it, not just admire the unusual effect.
You decide whether to use Purple Ray
The printed timing is once during your turn, when you put Espeon Star from your hand onto your Bench. You may use the power at that moment, but you can also decline. Simply keeping Espeon Star on the Bench does not let you activate it again each turn.
Illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda, this Espeon Star is a 70 HP Basic Psychic Pokémon.
Psychic Boom counts the Defending Pokémon’s Energy
Purple Ray is not the card’s attack. The separate Psychic Boom costs two Psychic Energy and one Colorless Energy, and its printed 30+ damage means 30 damage plus 10 more for each Energy attached to the Defending Pokémon—not the Energy attached to Espeon Star.
The card also carries the historical Pokémon Star deck restriction: no more than one Pokémon Star in your entire deck. That is a total across Pokémon Star, not an allowance of one per species.
