LEGO 40889 Build, Paint and Play! shrinks the model-kit workbench

With LEGO Ideas Build, Paint and Play! (40889), the model kit and the workbench around it become one miniature display. The newly revealed set recreates the tools, paint and glue in LEGO form; it does not include usable hobby supplies.

A little hobby corner, down to the paint-tube labels

The 158-piece set arranges a parts sprue, cutting tool, glue, paint tubes and brush on a green cutting mat, alongside a teal Classic Space astronaut minifigure. It is designed as a display for adults, with the familiar clutter of model-making condensed into a small desk or shelf scene.

The set grew out of fan designer Doomslizer’s winning entry in the LEGO Ideas Build Your Favourite Hobby Challenge. The original proposal featured a blue astronaut; the finished set uses teal.

Even the paint-tube labels have a connection to LEGO: 107, 26 and 24 are its internal colour codes for teal, black and yellow. Jay’s Brick Blog also highlights the light bluish gray Classic Space helmet and air tanks on the sprue—a detail likely to catch the eye of collectors looking for matching astronaut parts.

The US offer starts October 28, while stocks last

The Brick Fan and Jay’s Brick Blog report that the US gift-with-purchase offer begins on October 28, 2026. Shoppers will need US$130 in qualifying purchases at LEGO.com or a LEGO Store to receive the set, while stocks last. That amount is the spending threshold for the gift, not a retail price for 40889.

The reports do not give an end date. A Korean start date and spending threshold for 40889 are not yet listed in LEGO Korea’s current promotion notice.
