Amazon’s new Echo Dot brings a built-in smart home hub to the series for the first time, letting it control compatible lights and air conditioners through Alexa. It launched in Japan on October 29, 2026, alongside Echo Time, a camera-free smart clock designed for bedtime and waking up.

Red I want to try changing the room lights mid-playlist without reaching for another remote. That’s the part that has me curious.
Nea I’m drawn to the gradually brightening clock. I’d like to see how it feels to wake up that way, with the alarm starting softly.
A smart home hub inside the sphere
Echo Dot costs ¥17,980 including tax in Japan. It retains a compact spherical body, wrapped in audio-transparent 3D-knit fabric, and plays music, podcasts and audiobooks.
The hub connects compatible smart home products to Alexa; it does not make ordinary appliances compatible. There is also a built-in eero Wi-Fi extender, which requires an existing eero network.
Inside is Amazon’s AZ3 chip with an on-device AI accelerator. Amazon says this improves conversation detection and filters background noise. Omnisense supports presence detection, room-temperature sensing and tap gestures, while Voice ID can personalise playlists for the person speaking.
Japan’s four colour options are Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green and Coral Pink.

Echo Time keeps the bedside camera-free
Echo Time costs ¥35,980 including tax in Japan. Its hemispherical body houses a 3.2-inch circular touchscreen showing alarms, the music currently playing and weather. There are more than 100 clock-design combinations, with Graphite, Glacier White and Coral Pink finishes available.
The sleep monitor uses ultrasound to detect breathing waveforms and the user’s distance from the device, without a wearable. Its smart alarm uses sleep-state information, gradually brightening the display and increasing alarm volume as wake-up time approaches. Extending that lighting routine to the room requires a separate compatible smart light.
There is no camera, video calling or video streaming. Sleep monitoring can be switched on or off in the Alexa app’s device settings, and disabling the microphone also stops monitoring. The sleep monitor is not a medical device and is not intended for diagnosis, prevention or treatment.
Alexa+ invitations are rolling out in stages
Both devices support Alexa+, whose Japanese early-access rollout began on October 29. Eligible Amazon.co.jp accounts with supported existing or newly purchased devices receive invitations in stages. Buying an Echo Dot or Echo Time does not guarantee that Alexa+ will be ready to use immediately.
