OpenAI Agents API brings the managed Codex harness to public beta

  • Public beta available to all developers
  • Managed sessions, orchestration, context compaction, and recovery
  • No added API fee; standard usage charges and US-only data residency

AIKO: Parallel tool calls that filter results before returning to context make for tidier machinery. That is delegation I can appreciate.
Red: Not having to wire every session, recovery, and subagent loop sounds inviting. I’d still set the permissions carefully and watch the usage costs before letting it run.

OpenAI has released the Agents API in public beta, giving all developers access to an API-based version of its managed Codex harness. It handles the machinery around agent sessions and orchestration without taking control of the tools or environments developers choose.

OpenAI runs the harness; developers set the boundaries

The service manages sessions, orchestration, context compaction, and recovery. Developers still choose the tools, permissions, and execution environment. An agent can run in an OpenAI-hosted sandbox, on the developer’s own infrastructure, through a supported sandbox partner, or without a sandbox where appropriate. Sandboxed agents can execute code, edit files, connect to MCP servers, and produce artifacts.

Sessions can be steered, resumed, and delegated

The managed harness supports steering work in progress, resuming sessions, searching for tools, and assigning independent subtasks to subagents. Programmatic tool calling can run operations in parallel, chain them together, and filter or combine results before returning only relevant information to the model context.

The beta still has billing and data limits

The Agents API carries no additional platform fee during public beta, but model tokens, tools, and OpenAI-hosted sandbox containers remain billed at their standard rates. Data residency is currently limited to the United States, and Zero Data Retention is not supported. Running the sandbox on a developer’s own infrastructure does not make the API eligible for Zero Data Retention.
