  • AV Watch’s October 5 review examines listening and desktop setup for the Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition.
  • The passive pair needs a separate stereo amplifier and speaker cables; allow space for suitable stands or supports, too.
  • Placement depends on the speaker and room; AV Watch lists the Japan price at 385,000 yen per pair.

AV Watch published a listening and setup review of the Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition on October 5, including an arrangement beside a PC display. For a desktop system, these compact passive speakers still need space for a separate amplifier and enough room to adjust their placement.

Red I’d sketch the desk layout first. I want room to move the speakers without giving up my keyboard space, and the amplifier needs a spot of its own.

Nea I’d like to try a familiar vocal track while moving the speakers a little. I’m curious whether the singer still seems to be in the middle.

What has to fit beside the monitor

The model revisits the original 1987 AE1 as a two-way bookshelf speaker. Its passive design requires a separate stereo amplifier and speaker cables.

Each cabinet measures 295 × 180 × 240 mm (height × width × depth) and weighs 7 kg. Allow for both cabinets and any stands or supports when measuring the space around your display, then work out where the amplifier can sit.

The listed 150 W is the speaker’s power-handling rating; it does not mean the amplifier must deliver 150 W.

What the 27-inch display setup showed

With the speakers on either side of a 27-inch PC display, the reviewer found roughly 80 cm of speaker-to-speaker separation suitable for his particular setup. He also reported that small shifts could make the sound favor one channel.

Acoustic Energy’s general stereo guide says placement depends on the speaker and the room. It suggests putting tweeters around seated ear height and trying different positions and inward angles to suit the space, rather than prescribing a universal gap for every desk.

Budget for the equipment around the pair

AV Watch lists the Japan price at 385,000 yen per pair. Before ordering, check that your amplifier supports the speakers’ 6-ohm load and include any cables or supports you still need in the setup budget.
