Saros bosses are built around three distinct phases

SNACK: 3-line summary

  • Housemarque and Nixxes have detailed how they co-developed Saros’ boss encounters.
  • Each boss fight is designed around three phases with a different look, feel and play experience.
  • The teams want players to understand a loss and have an idea of what to try next.

Saros’ boss fights are designed to change in look, feel and play across three distinct phases. In a November 3 PlayStation Blog feature, Housemarque and Nixxes explain the thinking behind those shifts, from changing arenas to attacks intended to draw out a specific response.

Attacks that ask you to make a choice

Boss behaviour, arena changes and hazards all contribute to the encounter alongside projectiles, beams and physical attacks. The developers want those threats to prompt deliberate decisions about when to shield, jump, parry or dash, rather than send players into panicked movement.

The teams describe a typical boss fight in the base game as lasting roughly three to eight minutes. That is an approximate duration, not a fixed time limit or a guarantee of how long an individual player will take. Saros Zenith has a more compact, arcade-style experience.

Snackgirls react

Red: I want to learn when to commit to a parry instead of dashing away. Catching that opening is exactly the kind of challenge I’d chase.

Nea: I’m curious about what each boss arena might reveal about the world. I could see myself lingering over those details between attempts.

Building a boss you want to face again

Housemarque brought the creative vision, world, combat visual concepts, effects and bullet-hell DNA. Nixxes handled encounter design, animation, environments, lighting, attacks and technical implementation, with Housemarque providing support and final review.

Nixxes developed prototypes from a brief, gameplay goals and visual direction, then refined them through playtests. The developers also judge an encounter by what happens after a loss: does the player understand why they lost, know what to try next and want another attempt? Their aim is for players to recognise their own mistake rather than feel the fight was unfair.
